What happened to Sajil ?
On 1st September 2023, Sajil Man Shakya decided to have a relaxing time with his family at Square Hotel Pulchowk. Everything was going smoothly; they had made their reservation for around 3 PM and arrived at the hotel as planned. The family decided to order some food before heading to the heated swimming pool.
After placing their food order, Sajil and his 2-and-a-half-year-old daughter had a delightful time in the heated pool, playing for a while. However, his daughter started feeling uncomfortable after some time due to her swimming goggles. Sajil took her out of the pool and handed her to his wife to adjust the goggles, while he also made some adjustments.
After a brief moment, Sajil decided to take his daughter back into the pool. Slowly approaching the staircase, he gestured for his daughter to follow and extended his hand for support along the poolside, where electric spotlights were placed near the swimming pool. This is when an unexpected incident occurred.
As soon as he placed his hand on the poolside, his hands touched one of the spotlights, and he made some peculiar expressions while beginning to shake his body. Initially, his wife thought he was playfully teasing their daughter, but after a few seconds, she realised something serious was happening and quickly grabbed his hand. While she grabbed his hand, she felt an electric shock, panicked, and began searching for ways to get him off the poolside. She shouted for a long time, asking for help, but no one was there to assist them. The absence of lifeguards around the pool made the situation even more urgent and serious.
As the incident unfolded, one of the restaurant staff members approached to serve their drink order. Upon noticing the incident, he rushed to help Sajil out of the pool. At this moment, Sajil was already unconscious. Shortly afterwards, other hotel staff members also arrived, and together, they took him to Medicity Hospital in an emergency.

Sajil’s wife's statement
My husband is still fighting for his life, and we are here fighting for his justice. What I want right now is a smile on my husband's and daughter's faces. The feeling of being together yet so far apart. He is the enigma of our universe, the whirlpool of happiness. My immense gratitude and hope lie in each individual's ability to bring, seek, and ask for his survival in terms of 'JUSTICE’.

Sajil’s sister’s statement
My heart bleeds when I see you, and it shrinks when I feel each family member's grief. My usual route has many small temples that I pass through. Subconsciously, my hand folds, and I murmur, “Sajil lai chito Nikko gari dinuhos.” How I long for you to be as you were, walking, dancing, and laughing out loud. It's been five months since we began living with the whirlpool of hopes for your recovery, and I am eager to bring back a smile to Mom's face, peace of mind to Dad, and a lovable atmosphere for Sara and Razzi. You always supported me, and now I will support you no matter what. "FIGHT BACK, BROTHER." Lots of love and immense prayers, Tata.
Current Situation
Due to a severe electrocution incident, Sajil has been in a critical coma state for the past five months, showing no signs of significant improvement. His family remains deeply concerned about his condition, aware that any moment could bring unforeseen changes.
The initial treatment in Medicity Hospital had no positive results. After careful consideration, the family decided to transfer Sajil to Annapurna Neuro Hospital, a decision they now consider the best. At Annapurna, a positive of hope emerged as Sajil’s condition gradually improved, thanks to the dedicated and cooperative efforts of the medical team.
Following the doctors’ recommendations, a chip has been implanted in Sajil’s body, enabling him to respond to specific sounds. Through this progress, he is partially conscious and dependent on peg feeding, requiring the constant attention of a 24-hour nurse.
The journey has been challenging, but the family is grateful for the positive turn of events at Annapurna Neuro Hospital and remains committed to supporting Sajil on his path to recovery.

Health Condition
It’s nearly half a year since my husband (Sajil Man Shakya)has been in a state of coma. As of 7th January 2024, Revised-Coma Recovery Scale(CRS-R)-11 (Based on this scale-his state of conciousness is defined as minimal conciousState-MCS)People in a minimally conscious state do some things that indicate some awareness of self and of their environment, such as making eye contact People in this state require comprehensive care, including good nutrition and measures to prevent problems due to not being able to move (such as pressure sores). The longer a minimally conscious state lasts, the less function people are likely to regain.
As per the doctors research and possible treatment for Sajil, on 29th November,2023 Spinal cord stimulator(SCS)was inserted into the epidural space of the cervical vertebrae, and placed at cervical levels C2-C4. Five-hertz stimulation is applied for 5 min every 30 min during the daytime at an intensity that produced muscle twitches of the upper extremities. This SCS method could be a new neuromodulation and neurorehabilitation technique for minimally conscious state patients.
When a person emerges out of a coma, physical therapy is an instrumental segment on the road to recovery. Physical therapy is a crucial way for individuals who have gone through a coma to improve their motor skills and stimulate brain function. Many cases, individuals will need to relearn how to use their muscles and joints, yielding a lot of pain. In physical rehabilitation, without pain, there will be no gain. Hence everyday two sessions of physiotherapy is done aiming to facilitate arousal and postural control, increase pulmonary ventilation and improve circulation. There are cases where acupuncture has helped to arouse coma patients with severe brain injuries hence, as suggested by the doctors session of acupuncture is done daily as Some studies have shown that acupuncture could improve blood circulation to the brain, promote the recovery and regeneration of brain nerve cells, stimulate nerve cells in a “dormant” state, and relieve cortical inhibition, thus facilitating the recovery of the patient’s state of consciousness Also as per doctor’s recommendation as the tracheostomy has been removed we have been advised to give speech therapy to Sajil. As In the early stages of recovery, especially if the patient is in a coma, speech therapy focuses on helping the person respond to sensory stimulation and also teaches the person’s caregiver and other family members how to communicate with their loved one. Hence, we have started speech therapy as well In terms of giving best treatment to Sajil we have had conference with doctors from other countries such as Thailand, Singapore, India, America as well. However, they have recommended that we are doing the best for Sajil and that is what needs to be continued until Sajil gains a bit of consciousness and we can take him abroad for further treatment.
Challenges
The family has been dealing with tough times due to Sajil’s health and legal issues. On the legal front, they encountered significant obstacles as the police overlooked their complaints and statements. Hoping for a positive turnaround, the family patiently waited, but no help came. Frustrated, they took matters into their own hands, staging a silent protest on 14th January 2024, in front of Square Hotel, where the incident occurred. Their public demonstration was a call to draw attention from the authorized department. Nepal Police finally acknowledged their statements and commenced an investigation. However, despite this initial step, progress in the case was disappointingly slow. To push things along, the family organized another protest in Jawalakhel, aiming to grab the authorities’ attention and get justice for Sajil. The family is actively pursuing justice for Sajil in court, doing their best to ensure a fair resolution.
